This stunning itinerary follows a traditional “Blue Cruise” route along the southwestern coast of Turkiye, between the coastal cities of Fethiye and Kekova over a one-week period. It can also include some of the Greek Isands of the Dodecanese, such as Kastelorizo, Leros, Kos and Rhodes.
Why take a Blue Cruise – Also known as The Blue Voyage, this is one of the most iconic sailing experiences in the world, offering travellers the chance to explore Turkiye’s rich and beautiful Turquoise Coast aboard traditional wooden Gulets (Turkish Schooner). But how did this unique maritime tradition originate?
The story of the Blue Voyage is deeply rooted in Turkey’s maritime heritage, dating back thousands of years to the ancient seafarers who sailed the Aegean and Mediterranean. However, it was only in the mid-20th century that the Blue Voyage became a legendary travel experience, thanks to a combination of literary inspiration, cultural preservation, sponge diving and exploring Turkey’s stunning coastal landscapes.
The Turkish Riviera, which stretches from Bodrum to Antalya, has been a hub of maritime activity for over 5,000 years. Ancient civilizations, including the Ionians, Lycians, and Phoenicians, were among the earliest seafarers in the region, using their wooden vessels to navigate the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas for trade, exploration, and warfare.
One of the most famous maritime powers in history, the Lycian civilization, who existed between 1200 BCE – 500 BCE, built cities along the coast, including Patara, Xanthos, and Myra. These ports served as vital hubs for trade routes connecting the eastern Mediterranean to Greece and Egypt.
The Romans and Byzantines continued to use these waters for trade and military campaigns, leaving behind an incredible archaeological legacy, including shipwrecks, ancient harbours and sunken that can still be seen today.
